Cause
The US was producing arms and transporting supplies for the allied forces and Germany wanted to stop or slow that down. Germany wanted Mexico to start a war with the US so that they would be tied up and Germany could focus on beating the British and French on the western front without the support of the US. They also wanted to fight with unrestricted submarine warfare which the US did not want them to. If Mexico helped them Germany said they would help them recover Texas, Arizona, and New Mexico.

The Zimmerman Telegram January 17th 1917
After receiving the message that was sent from Germany we have carefully decided that we can not stand for this and we are declaring war on Germany.

Effect
The British received the telegram and passed it onto the US in hopes that they would join the war against the central powers. The US received the message and were angry. They only got angrier when Arthur Zimmerman, the man who was part of sending the telegraph from Germany confirmed that it was real. Upon learning that it was real the angered people of the US decided to declare war on Germany.
