- The Townshend Acts 1767
- In the year 1767 in the British colonies, The British government passed some new laws. These were called the Townshend Acts.
- No taxation without representation
- We don't need more laws.
- The new acts will add taxes to imported items from the UK. Glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea are some items that will be taxed.
- This is nonsense!
- Yes I heard. All of our daily items we buy are now going to be taxed.
- They say that the British are building a Customs Board up in Boston where they can collect our taxes.
- Did you see the Townshend acts? The British Parliament put taxes on any imported items brought from the British.
- The taxes on the items are not the only things that anger me. Its that we have no representation in Parliament.
- Your right. We can just purchase smuggled. We won't have to pay any taxes
- What if we just start smuggling items from other places like.
- Yeah your right we have no one that represents us. I see these acts as an abuse of power.
- Later on the British realized that people were smuggling tea and other materials from other parts of the world. Soon, British officials were given the right to search colonists' houses and businesses for smuggled goods.
- Search all of the houses for smuggled items.
- Hopefully they don't find my smuggled paint and tea.
