  • The first group that left to leave for the Holy Land in the First Crusade were mostly peasants. It was led by Peter the Hermit. His army mostly consisted of women, children, and untrained men. They were not prepared for the journey to the Holy Land. Most were killed by the Turks and various other problems before reaching the Holy Land.
  • In the end, the First Crusade was a military success. The professional armies that followed behind on land and sea. The crusaders had captured Jerusalem in 1099. They managed to take Muslim kingdoms by surprise. And in the Holy Land, they managed to establish four crusader states.
  • In 1144, the Muslims counterattacked. They conquered the state of Edessa. This scared the Europeans. They were always on defense, and the pope called for a second crusade.
  • I COMMAND A SECOND CRUSADE!
  • King Louis VII of France and the German emperor helped organize the Second Crusade. Elanor of Aquitaine, King Louis' wife, joined the crusade too. Even with the powerful backup, this crusade still failed. Some reasons were because the leaders argued, and they failed to gain support from the Muslims.
  • As the Second Crusade was failing, the Muslims grew stronger. Their leader, Saladin, recaptured Jerusalem. This provoked the Third Crusade, which was organized by rulers of England. Richard I of England became the ruler of the crusade, and won many victories and established a civil relationship with Saladin. They both signed a truce which ended the Third crusade. Though Jerusalem still laid in Muslim hands, Saladin agreed to respect crusader lands and let Christian pilgrims travel freely.
  • The crusaders who took part in the Fourth Crusade never managed to reach the Holy Land. They looted Christian cities in attempt to fund their campaign. The crusaders stormed Constantinople. They smashed Christian icons, thieved, and harassed women. The Byzantines never forgave the Christian Catholics after the raid.
  • ..the crusaders who should have used their swords against the infidel have instead bathed those swords in the blood of Christians..
