Just War vs. Pacifism

- My opinions are war are those of Just War, meaning I believe that there are certain situations that are either so threatening or so destructive that the only way to handle them is with war.
- I am a conscientious objector with pacifistic beliefs. I believe that violence cannot be the solution to violence and I seek more peaceful ways to partake in the military.
- I only believe in war that meets the proper criteria of jus ad bellum, jus in bellum, and jus post bellum. War should only be fought in the most extreme circumstances and must be waged in a way that respects human rights.
- My official position is that all war is wrong. I just don't believe killing other people should be used to solve problems in any situation.
- Do you look down on people who serve in the military and who do kill then? You are a soldier in the military as well
- Absolutely not! Those who fight in the military are our protectors. From a religious perspective, Jesus did not condemn soldiers so neither can I. You fight on behalf on an authority who tells you to.
- I agree that Jesus did not condemn soldiers, but he also did not condemn the rightful use of violence. So long as we are fighting in a just way and on behalf of a just cause we are correct in waging war, and this is the official position of the Church. I don't like fighting but sometimes there is no other option.
- But you also must agree that we were trained in a way that glorifies war. It is incredibly easy to fall into the group mentality that killing is okay, even when we have a natural inclination to resist killing another human being, even on a battlefield. I think we need to also see our enemies as people.
- I understand you point of view. I don't agree with your position but I also don't think you should be so harshly discouraged from being a conscientious objector. It must be very hard to have to justify your position to everyone here.
- Thank you. I also do not agree with your position but I am thankful that you protect us in volatile times. You still try to follow a moral guideline and also take into account a religious perspective.
