Jackie is in nursing school and is trying to decide what classes to take next semester.
Labor and delivery might be interesting!
From the textbook: “The maternal mortality rate for non-Hispanic Black women was 3.55 times that of non-Hispanic White women.”
Wow! That's terrible.
Here is just one Black woman’s pregnancy experience in 2023.
The beginning of her pregnancy was completely normal and she was eagerly awaiting the birth of her first child.
Even got away with no morning sickness!
Later in her pregnancy, she was experiencing excruciating pain and expressed it to her doctors and nurses. They did not believe her and did not help her relieve her pain. She was sent home.
I am in so much pain and can't stop vomiting. Please, I need medicine.
A few weeks later, Jackie begins to go through labor but is having severe headaches, nausea, difficulty breathing, blurred vision, and swollen hands, face, and ankles.
I feel horrible.
Jackie was able to hold her daughter, but unfortunately passed away soon after.
Autopsy
Cause of Death: PreeclampsiaPreventable
As soon as I told the doctor my symptoms, I was diagnosed and treated for preeclampsia. I’m so sorry.
Friends of the family comes over to offer condolences and visit the baby.
What?!
Autopsy said it was preeclampsia.
After learning about the vast racial disparities in medical care back in 2023, Jackie is relieved to live in a future where will be able to provide equal care to everyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.
