The Russian Revolution of 1905 began at the climax of the Russo-Japanese War. During the Revolution, thousands of laborers, peasants, and college students protested Tsar Nicholas II's reign and wished to bring Democracy and equality for all.
In order to maximize their efforts the protesters joined into a collective known as "The Bears"(Bolsheviks against the Russian Tsar). The founder of this was a laborer by the name of Sergey Smirnov. The protests were peacful in the begining, involving strikes and marches. However, on 22nd January 1905, an unarmed demonstration led by Father Gapon was openly shot down by the military.
After the massacre the Bears were divided in how they should they respond to the atrocity commited against them. Sergey the founder and most outspoken of the group, said that the shooting would provoke other countries to stand by the protester's side and believed that the Bears should continue with their peacful protests since the whole country would now stand by them instead of against.
