- Elias had disappeared because of the accusations about him at the same time Ibarra received a telegram from the Spanish authorities notifying him the approval of his donation of a school house for the children of San Diego.

- After the mass given by Padre Salvi and Padre Damaso. Elias moved to the side of Ibarra, who was praying together with Maria Clara. He warned him of a plot to kill him.

- That night at the dinner, Padre Damaso insulted the memory of Ibarras father. Ibarra, being insensitive, jumped on Padre Damaso with sharp knife and would have killed the priest if not for the intervention of Maria Clara which was so timely.

- After the fiesta, Maria Clara became ill and was treated by Don Tiburcio, a Spanish physician. Maria Clara was introduced by the latter's wife to young Spaniard by the name Linares de Espadana, who happened to be a god son of Padre Damaso's brother-in-law. Maria Clara refused the young Spaniard, despite the endorsement of Padre Damaso, because she loved Ibarra.
- Sisa, a former rich girl who married a man who is a gambler. She had two sons, Basilio and Crispin whom she loved very dearly.The chief sacristan accused Crispin of stealing the money of the priest and for this, he was tortured till he died in the convent.
