Storyboard Text

  • G'day mates! Today we're talking about Australia! Here are some facts about it! Australia is the only whole continent that's just one country. In size, Australia is the smallest continent and the sixth biggest country! It's one of the world's biggest producers of iron ore, diamonds, silver, zinc, gold, copper, and tin!
  • Most of the people who immigrated to Australia were from the United Kingdom and Ireland, until the mid-1900s. Once World War 2 stopped in 1945, the government started a program to encourage their people who were homeless due to the war to go and live in Australia.
  • Ahoy there!
  • Here, we can see some of the creatures unique to Australia. Some of its most famous natives are; wallabies, kangaroos, wombats koalas, and many other marsupials. Among some of its reptiles, the tiger snake and taipan are part of the world's most fatal snakes. Eucalypts or, as we know them, eucalyptuses are one of the most common plants in the country. There are about 500 different species of them in Australia.
  • Most of the people live along the coasts in the northeast and southwest. The inside of Australia doesn't have enough water to support the population of people who live in Australia, and very few do live there in the middle. Australia in the north is in the tropic region, which means that it is either warm or hot all year round. Everywhere else in Australia is just south of the tropics so it has warm summers and mild or cool winters.
  • English is the most common language. Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, and Italian are also commonly spoken. About half of the people in Australia are Christians, but most of them don't go to church on a regular basis. One of their celebrations are Australia Day on January 26th. It celebrates First ships that came to Australia, bringing the first immigrants in 1788.
  • Indigenous people were the first inhabitants of Australia, but most were displaced after Europeans arrived. These communities preserve some traditional Aboriginal ways of life, especially languages, religious beliefs, and styles of painting and craftwork.
