Odysseus and his men went into the cave and found loads of wine and cheese. They didn't see the Cyclops, so they decided to make themselves at home. Back then, the gods took hospitality very seriously. It was an honor to hold someone in your home as a guest. So when Odysseus saw all the food, him and his men thought it would be alright if they helped themselves.
When the Cyclops came back, he was very angry. To the Cyclops, hospitality wasn't a big deal to him at all. In his eye, he sees them stealing his food when they aren't welcome, As a result, he starts to eat Odysseus's men one by one. Then Odysseus tricked the Cyclops and gave him wine to make him fall asleep.
"Cyclops, try some wine. Here's liquor to wash down your scraps of men. Taste it, and see the kind of drink we carried under our planks. I meant it for an offering if you would help us home. But you are mad, unbearable, a bloody monster! After this, will any other traveler come and see you?"
, Odysseus told the cyclops that his name was Nohbdy. He then proceeded to stab the Cyclops in the eye as revenge. After, the Cyclops was in agony, he yelled for help, but since Odysseus said his name was Nohbdy, it sounded like the Cyclops was being hurt by no one.
"Ah well, if nobody has played you foul then in your lonely bed, we are no use in pain given by great Zeus. Let it be your father, Poseidon Lord, to whom you pray."
