Now that I think of I don't really do things like that with my parents.
When I was in 5th grade every day after finishing my homework I had the habit of going and playing games the rest of the day until I had to go to sleep. I really had nothing else to do but be by myself in my room and play with my friends. This meant that I would mostly exclude myself from my family and not really interact with them that much.
Climax
On a particular day however as I finished my homework and was about to go and play games like I always do my dad asked me as I was about to go up the stairs if I wanted to go somewhere with him. I at the time saw that as being something very boring and said no trying to be respectful about it. I didn't notice at the time but when I denied him, my dad gained a sad look on his face.
Falling Action
As I was upstairs playing with my friends one of our friends told us that he had to go because he was going to go with his parents somewhere. At that moment I realized that I never really did that often. I was mainly just upstairs playing games all day. That was the point when I realized that my dad probably felt sad that I didn't want to go with him, but having the thought process of a child I didn't really think much of it.
Resolution
You throw so slow!
Ha ha! I'm just holding back!
The next day however the unimaginable happened. I woke up to find that it was very bright outside. Usually, when I wake up it's still very dark so I found that extremely unusual. I got out of my bed and checked the time. It was 9:30, which was way past the time I had to go to school. I got worried and ran out of the room and looked for my mom. She was nowhere to be found. The person I did see however was my sister, which was again very unusual because she lives very far away and doesn't come often. At that moment, however, I was told that my dad got very sick in the middle of the night and had to go to the hospital. My sister then took me and my brother to stay at her house while my dad was at the hospital so that my mom could stay with my dad.
After a few days at my sister's house, she returned us to our house because our mom didn't want us to miss more school than we had missed already. On our way back, however, we stopped at the hospital where my dad was at. They wouldn't let me and my brother visit him because we were too young, but we could tell that everyone was in a bad mood. My mom was crying and I started crying too. That was the moment where I finally realized just how important family is.
Ever since that day, I have never wasted a moment of my time with my family. I always take any opportunity to spend time with them and have a good time. I realized that life is short and you never know when someone won't be with you anymore. I realized that I was no longer viewing the world through a child's eye, instead, I started seeing the world more maturely, as if I was no longer a child and I vowed that I would never take my family for granted again.
