  • ExpositionAfter Odysseus and his men spend two nights on a deserted island near the land of the Cyclopes, Odysseus becomes curious about the creatures in the mainland. His spirit of inquiry overcoming him, he sails to the island, arriving on one ship with a crew of men. "'A prodigious man slept in this cave alone, and took his flocks to graze afield...'" - lines 77-79
  • Rising ActionThe Cyclops catches a glance of Odysseus and his men in his cave and begins to question them. "'Strangers,' he said , 'who are you? And where from?'" - line 150
  • Rising ActionThe Cyclops picks up two of Odysseus's men in his hands and eats them whole, causing Odysseus to fear for his life. As he ponders about an escape plan, he notices that a heavy boulder covers the opening. Therefore, Odysseus and his remaining men have no choice but to spend the night in the cave with this gruesome monster. "'Neither reply nor pity came from him, but in one stride he clutched at my companions and caught two in his hands like squirming puppies to beat their brains out, spattering the floor.'" - lines 188-191
  • Tell him that I, Odysseus, blinded you!
  • ClimaxAfter Odysseus's men craft him a spike that he dips into the Cyclops's fire, he offers the Cyclops wine. When the Cyclops becomes drunk, Odysseus stabs the giant's eye, blinding him. "'...I leaned on it turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in planking, having men below to swing the two-handled strap that spins it in the groove.'" - lines 292-295
  • Falling ActionOdysseus ties his men to the bellies of the Cyclops's sheep. Then, he wraps his body around the bottom of the largest ram. They wait until morning when the sheep get released from the cave to graze. "'...then slung a man under each middle one to ride there safely, shielded left and right.'" - lines 344-345
  • ResolutionAs the ram Odysseus is under walks out of the cave, the Cyclops talks about how he plans to kill Odysseus. However, the ram eventually walks farther, allowing Odysseus to get off and untie his men from the sheep. As Odysseus and his men are sailing away, Odysseus screams to the Cyclops and reveals his true identity. "'...tell him Odysseus, raider of cities, took your eye...'" - lines 426-427
