Before the Revolution: France was a monarchy ruled by Louis XVI. The king had absolute power over the government and the people. Louis XVI divided the people of France into 3 social classes, which is known as The Estate System.
Call of The Estate General: Louis XVI had unwittingly sparked the beginning of the French Revolution due to financial mismanagement. France was losing significant amounts of money and was on the verge of bankruptcy. This series of events led up to the French Monarch convening with the Estate General to order a new land tax levy which the King hoped would ease the situation.
Tennis Court Oath: On June 17, 1789. The 3rd Estate renamed itself the National Assembly. On June 20, due to the fear of a royal attack, they took a collective oath in a tennis court, vowing not to disband until a new constitution was created. This pledge became crucial as the Third Estate persisted in demanding greater representation during the revolution.
