  • Hi Fatuma!
  • Hello my hearts!
  • Hooyo!

  • Hello Omar, my name is Salan.
  • He got beat up! I wasn't there to protect him and now I feel bad!
  • Hassan is your excuse! You are lucky that you get to got to school on exam day! I don't have a choice. I'll watch Hassan for you.
  • Omar is the main character of the story. They live in a refugee camp called Dadaab, in Kenya. Life was hard; never enough food, nothing to do, no availability to medical care. His brother, Hassan, is his only family member still living. He has a speaking disorder which makes him not be able to say anything. The only thing he could ever say was "Hooyo", which meant mom. The boys were transported to the camp at very young ages and grew up with their foster parent, Fatuma. Who takes care of they boys.
  • Hello Class. My name is Susanna Menendez. I work for the UN. If you ever have any problems i'm here for you.
  • Omar has always seen the boys in his area going to a school. He thought it wasn't the right idea because he had to watch Hassan. He wanted to experience what school was like but knew it wasn't right to do that to Hassan. Until Omar met Salan a director of the school at the camp. He saw Omar's talents and wondered why he wasn't going to school. Omar's friend Jeri went to school and wanted Omar to go too. Salan had offered Omar to go to school and even gave him supplies which was hard to get in the refugee camp, so he accepted.

  • Get out of my classroom!
  • Omar, come quick! Your name is on the list!
  • Omar had been warned a couple of days earlier that Hassan had been hurt. He didn't want to go back to school because of the accident. Maryam is one of Omar's friends, but Maryam was a girl and was forced to do chores instead of being able to take exams. So she was telling Omar that she would watch Hassan so he could take the exam. He passed the exam and was able to go on to secondary school.
  • Bye!
  • Hooyo!
  • Bye Omar and Hassan! I'll miss you!
  • Bye, Omar! Have an amazing time in America.

  • Omar's friend comes running into the classroom and tells Omar his name is on the list. This means Omar is potentially going to be resettled in America. Omar is shocked by the news and doesn't know what to think. The teacher is mad that this is interrupting the class and the class is all in shock too. Omar leaves the class and goes to the list to see what's happening. He then has to go through the progress of conferencing and waiting.
  • Omar and Hassan got accepted to be resettled in America. About 5 years had passed by the time their application had been accepted. All their friends and family were there for their depart. Jeri, Omar's friend, Fatuma, their stepmother, and Susanna who was supposedly responsible for getting Hassan and Omar this opportunity. Omar dodn;t know what could happen next, nut he was thankful for all that the community had done for him.
