  • The Reforming Care for the Disabled was a reform movement during the years 1815 to 1860 that addressed the issue of individuals with mental and physical disabilities. These people faced neglect, discrimination, and mistreatment. People with disabilities were viewed as a burden to society, and they couldn't get the proper healthcare they needed. This young man is William, and he was born blind. He faces discrimination anywhere he goes, and he cannot get the proper care he needs to help him get an education or find a job. When William tries to apply for a job at a farm, he was rejected. ''We can't do anything with a folk like you who's blind!'' They would say. ''Since, I'm blind, I am never going to be able to find a job!'' Says William.

  • William found Perkins School for the Blind, founded by Samuel Gridley Howe in 1829. What a miracle! William can learn without facing discrimination, and he can receive the healthcare he needs. ''Welcome to Perkins School for the Blind! I hope we can meet all of your needs here!'' Said Samuel Gridley Howe when William first arrived. He was going to love this school! During his first few weeks, William learns about other abolitionists like Dorothea Dix, who is an educator, social reformer, and activist for people with disabilities. As William finishes school, he finds a job! Things begin to change for individuals with disabilities over time. They face less discrimination and mistreatment.
