- Chapter 2!
- Scout goes to school for the first time and realizes the teacher isn't the best with kids. Scout shows she can read so Miss Caroline told Scout to tell Atticus to stop teaching her how to read, then slapped her on the wrist with a ruler.

- Chapter 3
- Scout spots Walter Cunningham in the school yard and beats him up for getting the reason she got in trouble. Jem stops her. Jem then invites Walter to their house to have dinner. He enjoys his food because he has been eating mostly rabbit recently.
- Chapter 9
- Atticus is asked to defend a black man known as Tom Robinson, who was recently accused of raping a white woman. He accepts the case, but he cannot hope to win. Atticus then tells Scout that he must argue it to uphold his sense of justice and self-respect.
- Chapter 10
- Atticus shoots and kills a rapid dog that is staggering down the main road of Maycomb. he shocked Jem and Scout, they thought that their father was old and untalented!
- Scout asks aunt Alexandra if she can come for a visit, she says its best if she stays with them for a while as Scout needs some "feminine influence" Scout does not agree with this but she keeps quiet about it.

- As his trial is nearing, Tom Robinson is to be moved to the Maycomb jail.
- Later, Jem tells Scout that Alexandra and Atticus have been arguing about their trial; she nearly accused him of bringing disgrace on the family.
