- The Anaconda Plan-1- To blockade the Souths Ports.2-Divide the confederacy by gaining control of the Mississippi river3- Capture Richmond.The Antietam War:General Robert Lee of the Confederate Forces sent his troops across the Potomac River, . In September, confederate and Union armies met along Antietam creek. All day McClellan's troops kept beating Lees badly outnumbered army. McCellan claimed victory although it was a loss for both sides.
- Gettysburg:Abraham Lincoln decided to make the Emancipation Proclamation. It had stated that all confederate states were to be free. But it also said " all men were created equal" now the fight was to live up to those words. Lee wanted to risk another attack. Union and confederate forces met at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The Union won this battle. The loses were immense. A group of northern democrats were more interested in peace and called themselves Copperheads. Some were sympathetic to the confederate cause. In 1863 Lincoln went to the graves of the dead and made his Gettysburg address.

- Vicksburg:Technology grew. The confederate made the Merrimac and the union made the Moniter. Both of the two ships went to war and shot at each other for hours. Neither won nor lost. After seizing New Orleans, Admiral David went up the Mississippi River. The town of Vicksburg was taken and part of the Union Waterway.
