- A CHRISTMAS CAROL Charles Dickens
- Merry Christmas! Out upon merry Christmas!What’s Christmas time to you but a time for paying bills without money; a time for finding yourself a year older, but not an hour richer; a time for balancing your books and having every item in ’em through a round dozen of months presented dead against you? (Dickens 10)
- Ebenezer Scrooge a business man who is grouchy, greedy and selfish and is feared by almost all. He dislikes christmas time and refuses to donate to the poor of London and the charities that come around his business. He used to have a partner in his business named Jacob Marley that died 7 years ago today on Christmas Eve. Scrooge is also very unforgiving to his employee Bob Crachit who suggested he could have off christmas day.
- Scrooges' Nephew, Fred comes to his office and offers him an invitation to Christmas dinner. Scrooge, despising christmas and disapproving of Fred's marriage rudely declines the offer. Fred is not angry at Scrooge's response but explains why christmas is a time for cheer and pleasantness even if he is not as rich as his uncle Scrooge. Scrooge tells Fred "Humbug" and Fred promptly walks out the office.
- Scrooge walks home after a long day of work and notices his doorknob seems to have the face of Jacob Marley his former partner! Although startled but continues upstairs. He walks upstairs to his bedroom and then the ghost of his former partner appears before him! Scrooge thinks its maybe the food he ate is the reason for the illusion! But the ghost of Jacob Marley says to Scrooge that 3 ghosts will visit him tonight and he must listen to there lessons and change his ways! Or Scrooge will end up like Jacob!!
- “hear me! I am not the man I was. I will not be the man I must have been but for this intercourse. Why show me this, if I am past all hope!” (Dickens 84)
- The first ghost named the ghost of Christmas Past brings scrooge back to his childhood boarding school right before christmas break where he wasn't sure his father would allow him to come back home for christmas. But his Sister who is also the mother of his nephew Fred, came off a carriage and reassured Ebenezer that his father did want him home for christmas. This makes Scrooge very nostalgic and makes him remember the very Happy Christmas' of his youth.
- The next ghost is named the Ghost of Christmas Present and he shows him the poor streets of London and how people suffer and he doesn't help even though he has so much wealth. He also shows him Bob Crachits family which is a family in poverty but still make the best out of christmas. He also sees the Crachit's young son named Tiny Tim who has a crutch and is crippled. He also is very sick so there is a possibilty of young tim dying because of his sickness.
- Scrooge finally sees his future.with the ghost of Christmas Future, A future where the world is ridden with poverty and desperation. Scrooge also sees where he dies. He sees all the people who he affected im poverty because he didn't spread his wealth enough. Will scrooge leave the life with a negative impact on his fellow people or will he find his ways?
