  • Police! Police!I've been robbed. A man down the street stole my purse.
  • POLICE STATION
  • You're going to jail.
  • Step 2
  • Mr. Rodney, if you are found guilty of theft, your bail will be $20,000.
  • Step 3
  • Mr. Rodney: INNOCENT OR GUILTY?
  • Step 1 of criminal cases is arrest. The person who is suspected of committing a crime is arrested on sight by a police officer. Ms. Wright, the victim, reported Mr. Tanner, the suspect, to the police and he is being arrested for theft.
  • Step 4
  • What's it gonna be, Mr. Rodney?
  • Step 2 of criminal cases is the preliminary hearing. The suspect appears before the court and the bail is set. Mr. Tanner is being accused of committing the felony of theft and he could potentially have to pay $20,000 in bail.
  • Step 5
  • Step 3 of criminal cases is the indictment. The grand jury or judge hears the evidence and decides whether the suspect is innocent or guilty. The grand jury of the court is hearing all the evidence that can be used for or against Mr. Tanner. They are deciding whether or not he's guilt.
  • Step 6
  • Ladies and Gentlemen, the members of the Grand Jury have decided that Mr. Rodney is guilty of theft and will be sentenced to 3 years in jail with the possibility of bail for $20K.
  • Step 4 of criminal court cases is the arraignment. The suspect goes to court and decides whether the plead guilt or non guilty. They can either plead guilty and possibly get a lesser sentence with a plea bargain, or they can plead innocent and a trial date is set. Mr. Rodney and his attorney decided to plead innocent and their trial date was set.
  • We have decided ;to plead innocent, your honor.
  • Step 5 of criminal court cases is the trial. The prosecution and the defense present their cases/evidence and the jury reaches a verdict. Mr. Rodney and his attorney are the defense and are pleading innocence while Ms. Wright and her attorney are the prosecution and believe that Mr. Rodney is guilty.
  • Your honor, that man is guilty of theft.
  • No way! He's innocent.
  • Step 6 of criminal court cases is the acquittal or sentencing. The jury gives a verdict of whether the suspect is innocent or guilty. The suspect receivesan acquittal if they are innocent and they walk free. If they're guilty, they receive sentencing to X amount of years in prison. Mr. Rodney was found guilty and sentenced to 3 years.
