Storyboard Text

  • February 10, 2021
  • Today, class, we will be working on designing our own 3D models.
  • That's nice, Lucy...
  • Same day, 2 hours later
  • So, at my new house in California we have a pool with a slide and we even have orange and lemon and lime trees in our backyard! I'm going to this fancy all-girls private school in Orange county!
  • 2 months later, the last day of April break
  • Tell me honestly, Gemma, what is going on with you recently. You've been off ever since Lucy moved away. I care about you deeply, dear, please tell me what's wrong. Let's go inside.
  • Yup. That girl with the purple sweater is me. Hi. My name is Gemma Feilds, and I am a junior at Miles High School. I know, I don't look happy, but my best friend, Lucy Smith, just told me she is moving to California in 2 months, and I'm so scared to live without her. She has been my best friend since 2nd grade.
  •
  • I'm just not confident enough to go to school without Lucy. I miss her so much and I feel like I won't be able to make any more friends without her. I don't know what to do.
  • Lucy, darling, everyone at some point feels like they aren't good enough or that if they don't conform to society's expectations they are nothing. But listen, honey, you are the best you you can be, and I love you for it.
  • After school, we get on the bus and Lucy tells me all about her new house in California and how she is going to this fancy all-girls private school and her backyard has an orange grove. I'm listening, but the whole time I'm just thinking about the fact that by the time April break is over, Lucy will be across the country. I am so nervous because no one else in the school acknowledges I exist, except of course the teachers, and I can't even survive a week without her! How can I survive forever?
  • The next day
  • Deep breaths, deep breaths. You only have to get through 6 hours.
  • new girl
  • Ms. Ford, our neighbor, invited me over for lemonade while I was mowing the lawn. I think she can tell that I've been a little off ever since Wednesday, right after I said goodbye to Lucy. She might have also seen that I was crying.
  • Lunch time, same day.
  • So, do you have any pets? As you know, I have my dog, Bear, but I also have 6 chickens. I really love animals. I live right next to a barn, and I see the horses and sheep all the time.
  • I do actually! I have a dog as well, named Luna, but I also have a fish tank with 8 fish.
  • I told Ms. Ford all about my issues. She actually gave some great advice about becoming confident and self-secure. I am still nervous for school tomorrow, though. I told her that I'm scared that if I don't act like a robot barbie, society will shun me and I won't make any new friends.
  • On the first day back, I was opening my locker when a new girl came up to me and asked if I knew where the auditorium was. I said, yes, I do, and she asked if I could show her how to get there. Once we got there, we had already been talking for a couple of minutes and I got to know her. Her name is Jewel, she recently moved here from Minnesota, and she has a dog named Bear.
  • We ate lunch together, and we exchanged phone numbers. I still can't believe it! I made a new friend, on my own, without help from Lucy. We talked for the whole lunch period! I learned a lot about her, and she learned a lot about me. Anyway, the point of this story is to say, you don't need to be the most popular person on the planet in order to be successful. Sometimes, all you need is kindness. Just be brave and take risks!
