  • Define your energy source. Hydroelectric power is the electricity generated by harnessing the energy from flowing or falling water. This is typically achieved through the construction of dams on large rivers, where water flow is directed through turbines that convert kinetic energy into mechanical energy, which then generates electricity.
  • Is your energy source renewable or nonrenewable? Explain why.Hydroelectric power is a renewable energy source. Water is continuously cycled through the hydrological (water) cycle, meaning that as long as there is precipitation and a sufficient water supply, hydroelectric power can be generated sustainably. It does not deplete natural resources or exhaust water supplies, making it environmentally sustainable in the right contexts.
  • Describe how your energy source is obtained. How do we get it?Water Flow: River water is captured, typically using a dam to create a reservoir.Turbine Activation: When water is released from the reservoir, it flows through turbines installed at the dam.Electricity Generation: As the turbines rotate due to the movement of water, they drive generators that produce electricity.

  • Discuss how the use of this energy source impacts our environment. Altering waterways and local habitats. Affecting fish populations through blocked migration routes. Changing the natural sediment flow in rivers, which can degrade downstream ecosystems. Proper management practices, such as fish ladders and environmental flow assessments, are crucial to mitigate these effects.
  • Do you think that the use of your energy source will increase or decrease in the future? Why? Use data to support your answer. Environmental Concerns: Increasing awareness of ecological impacts may slow new dam constructions. Competition with Other Renewables: Advances in solar and wind power technologies have made them more appealing in some contexts. Investment in Existing Infrastructure: Many countries will focus on improving and upgrading existing hydroelectric plants rather than building new ones. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), hydropower is expected to continue playing a significant role in global renewable energy generation, especially in developing regions where new capacity may be needed. As of 2021, hydropower accounted for about 16% of the world’s electricity generation.
