  • The Missorui Compromise
  • Compromise of 1850
  • Kansas-Nebraska Act
  • The Missouri compromise divided the free states from the slave states on 36°30' due to the Louisiana Purchase. Kansas and Nebraska are close to that line but are a bit above it so in 1820, there was an understanding that they should be free states.
  • Two-Sided Settlers
  • The Compromise of 1850 resulted in California being admitted into the Union as a free state which made southerners feel like it was a bit unfair as California is down south and the Union wouldn't be balanced between free and slave states.
  • The Constitutions
  • The Kansas-Nebraska act was to help develop western territories in the Louisiana Purchase yet that caused a rift in the Missouri Compromise as Kansas and Nebraska would be considered part of the act even though they are part of the Missouri Compromise. So it all led down to popular sovereignty.
  • Admission of Kansas State
  • Because of the Kansas-Nebraska act, many proslavery and antislavery settlers rushed down to Kansas to build support for their sides. Since there were many settlers that came in, there were a lot of violent outbreaks and outbursts which earned Kansas the name of "Bleeding Kansas."
  • The Topeka Constitution was created by antislavery settlers to admit Kansas as a free state, yet it was unable to get past the proslavery Senate. Then the Lecompton Constitution was created by proslavery settlers yet it was blocked by free-state majority in the House of Representatives
  • On January 29, 1861, Kansas was admitted into the Union technically as a free state, but because of the Kansas-Nebraska, the people had the choice of whether they wanted to own slaves or not.
