  • The Estates General took place in Versailles on May 5, 1789. King Louis XVI was confrunted by commoners about the tax burden. The commoners were unsuccessful in reaching an agrement. This was the beginning of the French revolution. This event also lead to a rage by the commoners
  • Augest 26, 1789The Declaration of the Rights of Man
  • Men are born and remain free and equal in rights. Social distinctions may be founded only upon the general good.
  • The Tennis Court Oath was an act of defiance by the Third Estate. Jean Sylvain Bailly was the person who lead the Tennis Court Oath. The deputies of the Third Estate realized that any attempt at reforming they would be outvoted by the two privileged orders, the clergy and the nobility, had formed a National Assembly. Since they were locked out of the meeting hall, they had to move to a tennis court. There they took an oath never to separate until a constitution had been established for.

  • Parisian troops storm the bastille. This event signaled the start of the French Revolution. A great crowd armed with muskets, swords, and various makeshift weapons began to gather around the Bastille. In this event, king Louis XVI was overthrown. The capture of the Bastille symbolized the end of the ancien regime and provided the French revolutionary cause with an irresistible momentum.

  • "The Decloration of the Right of Men" was written by Jean-Jacques François Le Barbier in 1789. It was written to grant civil rights to the commoners of France. This document didn't state anything about womens rights or racial rights. The Declaration came from the tenets of the Enlightenment. This included individualism, the social contract as theorized by Jean-Jacques, and the separation of powers espoused by Montesquieu.
  • Because of the high price and scarcity of bread, women from the marketplaces of Paris led the March on Versailles on October 5, 1789. This was one of the most significant events of the French Revolution. Rumors swirled that foods, especially grain, were purposely kept from the poor for the benefit of the privileged. This provoked the poor women of France and they started a march. It ended up becoming more of a revolutionary upsurge than a protest.

  • The Flight to Varennes describes the royal family’s failed attempt to escape their house arrest in 1791. They were detained the following day and reterned to the capital. This was a turning point for the French Revolution because it showed the untrustworthyness of the king. A minor controversy arose in April when the king was expected to attend a public Easter Mass at Saint-Germain l’Auxerrois. Since he didn't want to attend, he planned on leaving his household. This was held up by protesters.
