- Suddenly water sprouts up from the hole! At first everyone is over-joyed. Then, they realize it is dirty water. Some of the men explain that it is still mixed with the pond water. Once they drilled down more it would be clean.
- Resolution
- The men continue to drill down. They find cool fresh water. They will now be able to build a well. Sometimes the men don't want to work. The leader comforts and convinces them.
- Resolution
- Nya's father tells Nya they are building a school. Because there is going to be a well, all the kids can, go even girls. She is over-joyed that she, Arriek, and Dep will be able to go to school. She would also not have to go get water soon. But for now, she went to fetch the water.

- When the well is finished everyone comes for water. It is cold and clear. Not brown or muddy or warm. Nya waits her turn to recieve a cup of water.
- Dep tells Nya the leader of the men was from the hated tribe the Dinka. Nya wonders why a Dinka man would help the Nuer. She goes over there to thank hom. He tells her his name is Salva.
