  • Take the initiative to know each student as a unique individual who brings varied backgrounds, strengths, needs, and perspectives to learning.
  • Standard’s Importance in Practice
  • We are currently learning about presidents, so I planned this tour trip to a former president's house. It combines what we are learning with some of their interests.
  • It means getting to know each student as a unique individual with their different funds of knowledge, strengths, needs, and perspectives about learning from the time they first enter the classroom and continue doing so.
  • Why I Want to Strive Towards this Standard?
  • This standard in practice takes on many forms. An example of this standard in practice is having students complete surveys asking questions about their interests, background, strengths, needs, and opinions on learning.
  • How I can Strive Towards this Standard?

  • By knowing each student as an individual, teachers can draw on students’ life experiences to make instruction meaningful and motivate students to engage with learning, thus leading to academic success.
  • The trees and grass are wonderful
  • The house looks like it came out of a painting. Amazing.
  • Wow, I love the architecture of the house
  • I would like to strive for this standard when I become a teacher because it can also help provide a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for students, demonstrating an ethic of care since teachers care about their students. An ethic of care is a part of my educational philosophy, considering my past academic experiences with teachers not caring about me as a person.
  • By recognizing, acknowledging, and accepting students as unique individuals, they feel welcome and safe, leading to academic success. They will also be more satisfied and improve academically.
  • As mentioned earlier, this standard takes on many forms in practice, and I can strive for it by having some writing activities that involve personal responses. These writing responses can be in journal entries or essays, and by having students write personal responses, I get to know them better.
