Henry sees someone he has knows for years die right infront of him
The 304th Regiment has been deployed to Chancellorsville and have been marching for 4 days now but they have finally reached the battlefield. Instead of fighting Henery runs from the battle.
The 304th Regiment prepares for another battle.

As Henry runs into the woods he sees a dead corpse further scarring him. Henry does not have the courage and guts to fight.
Henry overcomes his fears
Another battle asummes and Jim, Henrys best friend dies in the action of the battle. Henry is deeply sad and runs away from the conflict again.
As Henry meets up back with the 304th Regiment he overhears the General talking about deploying the Regiment callling them 'mule riders'. Henry wants to not be a coward and wants to prove the General wrong.
As the battle begins Henry, instead of running away captures the Confederate flag overcoming his cowardice. The book ends with Henry realizing both his cowardice and his courage and the balance.
