The domino theory was Eisenhowers theory that affected the Vietnam War and had the US on their toes trying to know what would happen next for Vietnam.
My idea is that when Indochina falls to communism, the other nations in Southeast Asia will fall too.
This is called the domino theory.
The French were trying to get back control of Indochina, but ultimitly failed. The vietnamese nationalists, led by a communist Ho Chi Minh, and they were about to win against the french in the battle of Dien Bien Phu. The world powers decided to have a meeting in Geneva to talk about Vietnam and the political settlement. The US got scared that Ho's victory or some kind of agreement would spread communism more. Eisenhower gave a speech to get support for the US to help the French.
We need to beat the French!
No! The French need to win to stop the spread of communism
Vietnam is important to the US because of economy, materials, and Southeast Asia will turn full communist.
Eisenhower explained why Vietnam was important to the US. There was economic importance such as the materials there (rubber, sulfer). He brought up the falling domino principle, or the domino theory. He explained that the first "domino" would be knocked down and the rest would fall quickly after that. This domino theory would effect southeast asia and japan.
Communists win!!!!!
Eisenhowers speech effect: His speech didn't have much direct impact. The battle of Dien Bien Phu was won by the communists - not what the US wanted. An agreement from the Geneva conference that stated that Ho's army could have northern Vietnam.
I second that
The domino theory is the reason why we are helping non communist South Vietnam with economic and military assistance
The domino theory annoucement was the reason for the US involvement in Vietnam. While helping out South Vietnam, the US army made a commitment in 1965.
After the "prime" of the domino theory, it is now largely discredited. America assumed that Ho Chi Minh was getting controlled by the communist Russia and China, which wasn't true because Ho's goal was Vietnamese independence and not communism. The American effort to block communism failed, and North Vietnam marched into Saigon, and communism stoped spreading. Most of the regions throughout Southeast Asia stayed out of communist control.
