The Chernobyl Disaster

- On April 26, 1986 in Pripyat in the USSR employees were designated to run a safety test on a secret plan known as The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant
- Engineers, you must perform a safety test on the power plant for us to evaluate its performance
- Everybody! Evacuate!
- During the safety test, a reactor within the nuclear power plant responsible for the internal explosions experienced a malfunction which lead to an explosion and fire that surpassed 23 kilometers
- What about the others? What are we going to do?
- After a few seconds everything went wrong
- The malfunction that occurred during the test had several impacts that changed history forever
- The aftermath of the disaster costed the USSR millions of dollars for the cleanup and containment, which severely affected its economy negatively that they had to put a hold to all their military advancements and projects against the US. They had to allocate significant resources to address the evacuating and resettling affected populations, decontaminating affected areas
- Many people lost their lives whether it was because of the widespread contamination of radioactive materials or because of cancer which continued to increase by 5% as an effect of the explosion.
- THIS IS CORRUPTION. THE USSR BETRAYED US!! WE DON'T FEEL SAFE HERE ANYMORE!!
- But the greatest effect was how the failure to execute this nuclear power plant caused a lack of trust and disloyalty amongst the people because they felt that the USSR was unable to protect them and isn't as strong as they believed it was. This was a point that the US focused on to be able to gain support from these angry citizens who felt betrayed. This was one of the ways that the US managed to win the Cold War, marking the end of the USSR
