  • The Parable of the Workers in the VineyardMatthew 20: 1-16
  • In the early morning, a landowner hired people to work in his vineyard.
  • I will pay you each a denarius for your work. Now, I will send you off to my vineyard.
  • At nine in the morning, the vineyard owner went to the marketplace and saw people with nothing to do.
  • You should also go and work in my vineyard. I will pay you what you earn.
  • He hired more workers around noon and at three in the afternoon. Around five in the afternoon, he went out and saw more people in need of work. He asked them why they had nothing to do and they told him that no one hired them. Yet, the vineyard owner welcomed them to work in his vineyard.
  • You should work in my vineyard.
  • When it was finally nighttime, the vineyard owner gave his foreman some instructions.
  • Gather the workers and give them their salaries, starting with the last ones employed and to those first employed.
  • Each worker was given one denarius even though some people worked longer than others. All the people who started working first thought they would be given more. Since their expectations weren't met, they were unhappy. Each of them expressed their complaints, but only one was given a response by the vineyard owner.
  • I'm only doing what you agreed to. I'm not being unjust. Take your denarius and leave. I wish to give those I employed last the same pay as you. Am I not allowed to do as I please with my money? Are you jealous because I'm willing to give the same amount of pay to everyone for their work?
  • The people employed last worked an hour, but yet they've been given the same reward as us who have worked much longer during today's heat.
