I woke up the August morning, knowing that today was the day! I was going to my mom's home country: Haiti!
I walked into the living room and found my mom packing.
Hi Mom! I'm very excited!!
Good morning, are you excited?
Today was a very big day for me. I had been to Haiti before, when I was 1 and 4 years old, but this time I would be able to make memories that I would remember!
As I was eating, my mom joined me in the kitchen, and spoke to me about today.
Wow, this is really going to be..... interesting.
This is going to be your first time truly experiencing a plane ride.
Oh, wow. This is my first time on a plane. What will this be like? Will everything be ok??
I knew that airplanes were the safest form of transportation, but there were still possibilities of dangers.
As I realized she was right, I was pondering all of the things that could happen, while on a plane.
A few hours past, and we made it to the airport, and after being in the waiting room for quite some time, our flight was eventually
Time to go, Sweetie
Oh no.... its time..
My fears started to come back, I began to shake a little.
We Boarded the plane. Everyone took their seats. The flight attendants explained what to do in case of an emergency landing.
There were butterflies , flapping in my stomach
And here is the emergency exit!
The plane took off. As it was escalating higher in the sky, my anxiety soared with it.
But after seeing how come everyone was, my worries had eventually vanished.
I had relaxed myself for the rest of the trip, I had watched tv and ate snacks.
Soon the plane landed at the airport in Haiti. My mom and I went outside to look for my uncle. We spotted him. He hugged me, and started talking about how much I've grown.
My. my! You've gotten so big since the last time I saw you!
As we were on the way to my grandmothers house, I noticed a lot of familiar things, such as the fruit stands on the sidewalks!
After a 30 minute car ride, we made it to the house, and my memory had officially come back. I'd recognize that gate anywhere.
I remember this!
My mother went to the front door, I followed her slowly. All of a sudden, I heard a shrieking sound coming from inside; I walked to see my 93 year old grandmother lying in a small bed in the living room. Her mouth was open, she was in a pure state of shock. And tears of joy started rolling down her suntanned face. I guess she wasn’t expecting us to arrive so soon
As I put my suitcase down, a thought crossed my mind. What would this trip actually be like? I was in a whole different country, surrounded by close family members, who spoke a different language. How would I communicate with them? I was feeling rather uneasy.
Oh!!!!
I nervously walked up to her, and said hello
H-hi
Hello!
She said something to me in French so my mom translated for me
She said hello, and that you look beautiful.
Haiti is very different from the US. It is warmer there, and sometimes, lizards creep through the holes in the walls.
I should probably get used to all of this now.
I stayed in the room watching Youtube for an hour, till a great smell pulled me out.
*sniffs* What's that?
I walked out and saw a plate of rice and beans on the table!
Wow!
After we ate it, I had some passion fruit juice, a Haitian favorite !
The first day in Haiti went very well! I had hoped that the rest of the trip would go well too.
I thought as my heavy eyelids closed.
I woke up to see everyone else was already awake.
Good morning!
Good morning Mom.Bonjour.
Bien!
Bonjour!
Como ca va?
My mom's cousin made breakfeast, which was baked bread and delicious eggs.
So Good!
The rest of the week was great. We enjoyed, sandy beaches, fancy restaurants and we had a lot of flavorful ice cream!
She says she hopes you have a safe flight back, and she loves you very much!
Soon the week was over and it was time to say goodbye. I hugged my grandmother. She said something to me in French, so my mom translated for me.
Bye!
Au revoir!
We walked outside and waved goodbye.
Bye!
During the return flight, I realized how great my grandmother really is, and how nice Haiti was. I couldn’t wait to go there again
The End
