  • At Mark's first holy communion, his little cousin, Luke, comes up to him, wondering why they were gathered at church.
  • Unable to answer Luke's incessant questions, the cousins go to Father John to learn more about Holy Communion.
  • Hey, Mark, why are we here so early on a Sunday, and why is the whole family here?
  • Well, Luke, today is my first holy communion, which celebrates when the last supper, where Jesus broke and shared bread and wine with His disciples. Here, Jesus shared with the people closest and most devoted to Him.

  • Inside the church, Father John teaches Luke the symbols of Holy Communion and the significance of them.
  • Father, how can I tell that a sacrament is holy communion?
  • The symbols that are used in Holy Communion can help you to distinguish what sacrament is occurring. Holy Communion has the bread to symbolize Jesus' body, and a chalice to symbolize His blood. Before people receive the body, the priest blesses it and breaks it, just as Jesus did during the Last Supper.

  • With all of Luke's questions answered, he decides that he wants to grow closer to God, and asks his parents if he can do his first holy communion in order to. But first, Mark prepares for His first Holy Communion!
  • Father John leaves to prepare for holy mass, but Luke has one more question....
  • But Luke, why did you want to receive holy communion?
  • Holy communion gives us the strength to make the right decisions and it grants them God's grace. We believe that Jesus lives in the Eucharist, and that through consuming it, we grow closer to Him. This sacrament reminds us of everything that Jesus has sacrificed for us.
