- How was your day Jimmy?...Whoa, what happened?! You've got mud all over you!
- It sounds like Sheldon's a racist and he's discriminating against you because you're black...is he white?
- This boy Sheldon called me a black geek, a monkey and pushed me into the mud. Why would he do that?!
- A racist is someone who thinks their race is superior and all other races are not as good. When these people treat other races badly and unfairly, its called discrimination.
- Yeah, Sheldon's white...but what's a racist? And what's discrimination mean?
- For example, your school is integrated but, in the past, schools were segregated. This means blacks couldn't attend the same schools as whites.
- That's not the only way blacks were discriminated against...we could not sit in the front of the bus, get the same jobs as whites or eat at the same restaurants as them.
- Wow! But it's not like that anymore...so how did it all change?!
- Well son, black people decided to stand up for equal civil rights. They would hold protests like marching and boycotting businesses that discriminated against blacks.
- Blacks were not being treated fairly so they had to fight for equal rights. One organization, called the NAACP, was one of the major groups that led this fight.
- The NAACP?...What's that stand for?
- It stands for National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.
- This fight was called the Civil Rights Movement. These brave men and women fought for equality and made it possible for people like you, your mother and myself to be treated fairly.
- You're right, that's exactly what I'll do when I go to school in the morning!
- You need to be brave just like them and stand up to racists like Sheldon who discriminate against you.
