- The Civil War was finally over, and slaves were free. Just one problem....They weren't treated right. They didn't have the same basic rights as everyone else. The reconstruction Era was a point in time where president Andrew Johnson wanted to fix society. Hence, the Reconstruction Era.
- While Andrew Johnson was Proslavery, he felt it was not neccesary to break up the nation over the matter and wanted to have the nation back (This was his first part of the reconstruction.)
- Even though blacks were free, they were facing many problems like the black codes and the ku klux clan. and were still treated poorly with hard labor jobs and low pay.
- Part of the reconstruction was to make sure the South didn't get too powerful so The Federal Government set up 5 Military Bases
- The freedmens beurea helped black men (and poor white men) get jobs, although, still not paying well enough.
- Soon amendments were given to the blacks (13th, 14th, and 15th amendments, giving black men more rights.) It wasn't perfect, but eventually, the nation would become an accepting melting pot and more diverse, cohesive place with all sorts of races, religions, and cultures
