  • Alright we are heading to another town, we are going by horse so you can see the southern landscape, but normally we would be traveling by boat on the extensive river ways we rely on.
  • Well here in the south we have very few railroads and the river system is the best form of transportation here with our steam boats of course. And we're heading to a city located next to a river or maybe it's by the ocean?Anyway it's like almost every city here in the south., But unfortunately the south's urban development is much slower than the North's so we will have to travel for a while more.
  • Alright, but why does the south rely on the river ways so much because the north has lots of railroads and travelling is much faster than this how much longer until were there? And where is this town were heading to?
  • Slide: 2
  • Alright now that we're on a boat we should get there much quicker, I wish we could've borrowed a steam boat though. But the city is just past those mountains.
  • Okay, but what does the south use these rivers for? Other than transportation.
  • Okay, I thought it would probably be for farming. Speaking of farming what social classes do the farmers fall in down here?
  • Down here in the south farmers like myself are the whole social class essentially, but there is different levels of farming. There are the most wealthy plantation owners, there are the second most wealthy small farmers, and both of these farmers would own slaves. Then there are the poor farmers, but then there are the slaves who have it the worst.

  • Here we've arrived at the town and here is a plantation owners house
  • Yes, here in the south the plantation owners like their house to reflect their wealth, which was accumulated by the vast amount of slaves they typically have. However they usually sleep in minimal cabins
  • Wow, this is a really large house, the north does not have many houses of this size.
  • Wow, that is unbelievable, the north I know is very strongly apposed to slavery and their treatment especially.
  • Me too, I'll go with you.
  • Yes they are! Well anyway this its been nice talking with you but I'm going to try to catch a steamboat to go home.

  • A while more? We've been traveling for an hour and a half!
  • The only thing we use the rivers for other than transportation is for farming. We heavily rely on them to transport the cotton we farm. We send the cotton either to the north or to Europe to be made into clothes.
