  • Channeling of unacceptable and potentially disruptive impulses, thoughts, or emotions into sociallyacceptable behavior. For example, instead of hitting a person. someone may channel their anger by boxing.

  • This is a movement back in psychological timewhen one is faced with stress. For example, a child wetting the bed when faced with overwhelming situations.

  • Denial involves blocking external events fromawareness. If some situation is just too much tohandle, the person just refuses to experience it. For example, a man who denies that he has an alcohol addiction because he can still function and go to work.
  • Disguising unacceptable thoughts, feeling, and motives by projecting them to others. The example is a woman who has been unfaithful to her husband but who accuses her husband of cheating on her.

  • Redirecting of thoughts, feelings, and impulses from one another who poses less threat. For example, a mother who is angry at her boss may take out her anger on her children by shouting at them.
