This week, I'm planning to build a new enclosure for the sheep on my farm
For this new enclosure, I've set aside a section land that is shaped like a square and has an area of 144 square feet. Now, I need to figure out how much fencing I need to build a fence around the perimeter of the enclosure
Here is what the area I've set aside for the enclosure looks like from above. Now...how can I find out how much fencing I need to buy to put a fence around the perimeter of the enclosure?
Oh, I know! Let's use the square root!
144 sq. ft.
In mathematics, a square root of a number x is a number y such that y² = x; in other words, a number y whose square is x. This is the symbol that we use to represent taking the square root: √
So, to find how much fencing I need for the perimeter of the enclosure, let's start by finding how long each side of the enclosure is by taking the square root of 144
144 sq. ft.
When I plug √144 into my calculator, I get 12. That means each side of the square enclosure is 12 feet long.
Then, since there are four sides that are each 12 feet long, let's multiply 12 by 4 to get the total amount of fencing I need for the perimeter: 12 x 4 = 48 feet
