  • Annie Oakley was born in Darke County, Ohio on August 13, 1860
  • On May 1, 1882, Frank Butler's Shooting partner became ill and Annie Oakley became his full time partner in the act.
  • Having grown up in many tough living conditions, from a young age, Annie learned to hunt small game to earn money for her family.
  • Annie used her hunting skills to sell the game she killed to grocery stores. Annie was able to pay her mother's $200 mortgage with the money she earned from hunting.
  • Annie almost always competed in feminine clothing, even though it was "out of character," often times wearing clothing she had sewn herself.
  • At 15 years old, Annie Oakley traveled to Cincinnati to compete in a shooting competition against proven Marksman Frank E. Butler. Oakley outshot Butler and Butler would eventually marry Oakley.
  • Some of Annie Oakley's most famous acts included shooting the edge off of a playing card, shooting a cigarette out of her partner's mouth and shooting the cork off of a bottle.
  • Annie Oakley was aware of the gender barriers she was breaking, and presenting herself in a very lady-like manner was very important to her.
  • Oakley continued to gain fame as she traveled the world with Butler. Through their performances, they were able to join Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show where she became the main attraction of the show.
  • Throughout her career around the world, Annie Oakley showed people that women are capable and even better than men at handling firearms and shooting in competitions.
  • In 1897, while on tour with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, Annie Oakley performed in front of the Queen of England. Oakley's performance left the Queen in awe and eager to compliment her on her performance.
  • Annie Oakley advocated for women to become comfortable with a pistol, and be comfortable carrying a pistol in their purse in order to protect themselves. Annie was passionate about empowering women and showing their capabilities in the outdoors.
  • At the beginning of WWI, Annie Oakley advocated to fund and train a regiment of fully women soldiers in order to contribute to the war. Annie wrote to the Secretary of War to make her offer. Her offer was denied.
  • After retirement, Annie Oakley entered the acting world as the perfect fit to portray women in western films.
  • Annie Oakley passed away on November 3, 1926. She left behind an everlasting legacy for women in a primarily male dominated hobby.
