A professor at Sydney university, Phillips spends most of his time recording his findings in forerunner Temples, with the assistance of BB, an Artificial Intelligence. He is the only known Human to solve an Arum, a small device used to teach young Sangheili the value of patience when faced with a difficult problem. Part ornament and part puzzle, they are composed of nested concentric spheres which need to be aligned properly in order to release an object from its center (usually some type of gemlike crystal). He can be very sarcastic with people he knows, but very cautious when around unfamiliar people. His closest relationship is to BB, whom he is with all the time. His main motive is the lectures he will give back on earth.

Serin was born to Pinar Çelik and an unknown father. Her mother was a drug addict and prostitute who left Serin homeless and to pick food from the garbage. The only person who cared for her was her teacher, Alkmini Leandro, who called the police after her disappearance. She was abducted by an ONI agent who offered her a hamburger. Osman was not replaced with a clone as ONI decided no one would notice. Osman failed the augmentation process and was recruited into ONI. Considered a "protege" to Admiral Margaret Parangosky, the Commander in Chief of the Office of Naval Intelligence, she groomed the former Spartan for a potential future as her successor. She is known for her "in-your-face" way of answering people.

Naomi was born in the village of Alstad on the planet Sansar. Her family was middle-class and consisted of her father, Staffan Sentzke, and her mother, Lena. She was placed in a specialized school where the UNSC team Theta 2 carefully evaluated her to determine if she was fit for the SPARTAN-II program. She was abducted at age six and replaced by a flash-clone that died of a genetic illness eighteen months later. After the Human-Covenant War, she joined Kilo-Five, assisting in the capture of Jul 'Mdama and the rescue of Evan Phillips. On Venezia, Naomi was reunited with her father for the first time in over thirty years. She was pulled back for another weapons drop in order to prevent her from becoming too attached. She later returned and captured him. While he was in custody, she and Serin Osman revealed to him the truth about her abduction and the SPARTAN-II Program as a whole.
