- Hi, my name is Sarah. I am 11 years old and this is my home, in Charlotte North Carolina, the Crane Plantation.
- I'm Thomas Crane and my dad is teaching me how to run the family plantation. During the day he shows me how to maximize our cash crop yield. Even at just 15 years old I am able to help make decisions to run the fields.
- I am William, a slave that was bought by Mr. Crane and I work the fields. It is hard work and even if I am sick I must work. If I don't I will be punished.
- My name is Martha, and I was a gift to the Crane Family to help keep the house clean. I was taken from my home as a child and came to America on a boat. I must work as well to avoid being punished. I live with William in this shack just outside of the Plantation.
- Mother and sometimes tutors educates me in the study every day. It is very important that we learn from home, the new public schools won't prepare us like our family will.
- I work hard making sure the slaves pick enough cotton so that we can make a lot of money. I own hundreds of acres of fields and the Plantation takes a lot of upkeep. So I had to get a house slave to keep up the house. I gave William and Martha a home on our land since they are not allowed to own land.
- I can't wait for my turn to vote!
- Women, children, and slaves are not allowed to vote or participate in politics. Plantation owners make decisions.
