Act 1: Algernon Moncrieff's flat. Lane produces sandwiches for Algernon's visiting Aunt. Algernon begins to eat them. Enter Algernon's best friend Earnest.
Earnest confesses he is there to marry Algernon's cousin Gwendolen. Algernon forces Earnest to admit that he is actually Jack Worthing and that Earnest is his alter ego in the city to escape his responsibilities of watching over his ward Cecily in the country.
Jack states that he will kill off his brother Earnest in order to start fresh. Algernon Admits that he too has a fictitious invalid friend named Bunbury whom he uses to get out of doing things he doesn't want to.
Enter Lady Bracknell and Gwendolen.
Algernon leads Lady Bracknell to another room so that Jack can propose to Gwendolen. She tells him that Earnest is her favorite name and she could never marry another name. However Lady Bracknell reenters and refuses the marriage due to Jacks unknown background.
Gwendolen returns to tell Earnest that she will always love him and that she will visit him in the country. Algernon ease drops to acquire Jacks country address.
Act 2: The garden at Manor House. Miss. Prism is trying to make Cecily focus on her studies. Cecily just wants to write in her diary and day dream.
Enter Chasuble. Miss. Prism and Chasuble flirt in a very mild way. They all speak of the wickedness of Jacks brother Earnest. Cecily in a fond way. She takes this chance to get rid of Miss.Prism suggesting that they take a walk while she studies.
Enter Algernon Posing as Earnest in order to meet Cecily. Cecily is completely captivated. The two of them are taken with each other immediately. Then enter into the house for refreshments and to Get Algernon settled.
Reenter Miss.Prism & Chasuble. Enter Jack to inform everyone that his brother is dead. Enter Cecily to inform Jack that his brother is inside and will be staying with them.
Cecily forces Jack to accept "Earnest". Leaving them alone, Jack insists that Algernon leave.
Algernon agrees but admits to himself that he is in love with Cecily and must tell her so before leaving. Cecily confesses that they have been engaged in her diary for months. And that she has always wanted to love an Earnest.
Jack and Algernon have both, separately, gone to talk to Chasuble about changing their names to Earnest. mean while Gwendolen has come to visit Earnest/Jack. She meet Cecily instead and they immediately decide to like each other.
Until Cecily states that she is engaged to Earnest and Gwendolen says she is the one who is engaged to Earnest. The two ladies politely disrespect each other until Jack and Algernon reenter.
Cecily reveals that Jack is not Earnest and Gwendolen reveals that Algernon is not either. The women decide they will be friends again and leave for the house.
Act 3: Morning-room of Manor House. Gwendolen and Cecily watch from the window as Algernon and Jack discus among themselves. The ladies have decided to ignore the men as they enter the house.
The silence is quickly broken when Gwendolen and Cecily ask them why they pretended to be Earnest. Each man reply's "in order to see you". All is forgiven until Lady Bracknell enters the room searching for Gwendolen.
Lady Bracknell still refuses to let Gwendolen marry Jack, interviews Cecily and declines her marriage to Algernon until she finds out that Cecily has lots of money. However Jack refuses to let Algernon and Cecily marry on principal.
Enter Miss.Prism and Chasuble. Lady Bracknell recognizes Miss. Prism as the nanny who lost her sisters son 28 years previously. Miss.Prism admits that she misplaced the child at a train station in a black tote bag.
The bag turns out to be the one Jack was found in by his adoptive father. Making him Lady Bracknell's nephew and Algernon's brother. And it turns out that he was named after his father which in turn was Earnest!
The news of Jack actually being Earnest and having "admirable" ties makes everything okay. Everyone ends up with the one they want to be with and they live happily ever after. The End.
