- WHY I WANT MY DRIVERS LICENSEHaving my drivers license allows me more freedom, independence and gives me more responsibility. Being able to drive myself places will put less stress on my parents to remember where I need to be at certain times everyday, as well as more convenient to make plans. I can arrive or leave from any function when I want to and also provide a safe drive home if anyone has been drinking. By: Brystol Chisholm

- It's my 16th birthday, the time has come to get my BC drivers license. Firstly I get a "L" this allows me to drive with a licensed adult (25+)

- Welcome Brystol! You will have 1 year to finish the ICBC Graduate Learning Program.
- In order to finish the ICBC GLP driver training course, I must complete 12hrs of driving with a qualified instructor as well as 16hrs of in-class work and an additional 4hrs of online work. I can take this course after having my N for 1 year, completing this course grants you 6 months being taken off your N stage with the exception you've gotten in no "at fault" crashes, and/or driving violations/prohibatations through the first 18 months of having your license. Completion of the course gives you 2 high school credits.

- To better prepare myself for getting my license I have been studying the "learn to drive smart guide," taking both the knowledge and street sign tests. These tests are available on the ICBC website. Practicing multiple times, I feel confident I'm ready for my test at the ICBC licensing office.

- Yayay - I passed my knowledge test!! I now am licensed to drive under the ICBC rules, supervised with an adult while I drive. A magnetic L must be displayed on the back of my car while driving. I have printed copy of a ICBC driving log where I can document my first 60hrs of driving experience. Next I can register for a ICBC approved GLP driver training course.

- Post 1 year of supervised and maintaining a clean driving record as a learning driver, gives me the opportunity to expand my driving restrictions and I am now eligible to take my road test, passing this results in becoming a "Novice" driver. My red L car magnet now gets replaced with a green N. Becoming a N driver allows me to drive unsupervised with the limit of 1 non-family member passenger. Following up the GLP test after 18 months I am now approved to take the class 5 road test, if a good driving record is still maintained. Passing this test qualifies you as having a BC unrestricted drivers license.
