Theme: Love transcends borders, even death.The unnamed narrator of the story decides to return home to New York, he was stayjng for a few years in Charleston, South Carolina. At that time there were no cars, so they travelled by sailboat, so getting from one place to another took a long time. On his return trip he met an old college friend named Cornelius Wyatt, but to his surprise he was nog travelling alone, but accompanied by his wife and his two sisters, but what struck him most was the number of reserved cabins and a mysterious oblong box.
Rising action
Later, after the accident in the mess hall in which Cornelius fainted because he had insinuated that he knew what was inside the box, and after seeing the captain and two sailors take him to his cabin, the narrator heard someone open the door of the cabin next to him, and heard a strange sound, the narrator dreamt that he heard someone crying. Cornelius didn't want to leave the cabin next to the oblong box, he didn't eat, then the narrator tried to find some reason for his friend's behaviour, maybe it was because of his wife as he had noticed that she didn't stay with him in the cabin nor was she pretty and young as he had been told, maybe it was that his friend felt bad because he was married to the wrong person.
Falling action
The problem arises when the narrator begins to question what is inside the box, and why Cornelius is acting so trangely, as well as being suspicious of his wife because he sees that they do not relate to each other as a married couple and that she does not fit the characteristics he has heard about, and then the accident that leads to everyone being evacuated off the ship.
Resolution
The narrator meets his old friend but his face doesn't look very bappy to see him, he doesn't answer his greeting but his friend's wife responds politely and then they enter the cabin, the narrator notices that is friend's wife doesn't speak with a New York accent which is the accent she should have according to the description in the letter his other friend had sent him some time ago. After they entered, the narrator was left wondering who that third cabin was for, but then two men appeared leaving a oblong box in that same cabin, the narrator began to wonder what could be inside the box, the first thing he thought was that maybe they were paintings but he prefered to talk to Cornelius first.
An accident happened, the sea got out of control and mixed with a storm, the mast broke and the ship hit some rocks, the ship started to sink, the narrator completely forgot about the mystery if the oblong box and Cornelius, the captain called to evacuate, everyone was already in the small boats when they saw Cornelius pulling the oblong box with a frightened face with fear. The captain shouted at him to come up without the oblong box but he refused, the narrator shouted at him If is youf box more impotant than your life to which Cornelius looked at him with hate and shouted yes, falling into the sea with the mysterious oblong box, the wind blew the boats to the shore, the narrator and the travellers were safe.
A month passed, and the narrator met the captain again, they got to talking about the accident and the narrator asked him about Cornelius and what was in the mysterious oblong box, to which the captain confessed that it was a mistake to have taken the oblong box on the voyage and that it had brought bad luck as the contens of the box were Cornelius' dead wife who had died the day before the voyage started. The person pretending to be wyatt's wife was Wyatt's servant. The captain also told him that Cornelius loved his beautiful wife too much and that he only knew the truth.
