- In 500 B.C.E. The Persian Empire had defeated all of the Fertile Crescent. Many wanted to fight back and the Athens helped, Persian was angry and sent a representative to several greek city-states saying that all greeks should send him earth and water. The Spartans ended up throwing the representative down the well.
- Battle of Salamis

- This made the Persians very angry and Darius send his huge navy. The Spartans which were the best in the military at the time refused to help. Athens even though they didn't have a military destroyed the Persian's attack. The rest of the Persian soldiers retreated back to Marathon. The story tells us that the Athenians had an incredible runner named Pheidippides. Pheidippides had just sprinted 26 miles from Marathon to Athens to warn them that the Persians were coming.
- Battle of Platea

- After Darius dies Xerxes took the throne and swore the take revenge on Greece. Athens and Sparta were ready and they united together to defend them selfs. The Spartan king led a small army of 300 men. He did this so Greek citizens were able to have more time to retreat. Once the Persians found Athens deserted they burned Athens to the ground.
- Effects of the War
- The Athens tricked Xeres into believing the Athenian navy was going to the island of Salamis. The Persian ships were much bigger than the Greeks and they were not able to steer through the tight spaces.
- The Athenians and their allies defeated Xerxes' army for the last time in 479 B.C.E. Xerxes retreats to Persia and the Persian Empire never invaded Greece again.
- After the war both Athens because the most powerful city-state after rebuilding. This was called the Golden Age of economic and cultural magnificence.
