- King Lear plans to divide his kingdom among his three daughters, with the daughter who expresses the most love receiving more, a request that is met with flattery from Goneril and Regan.

- Lear asks his favorite child, Cordelia, for her response, which Cordelia truthfully denies, leading King Lear to disown her.
