- They bond over their shared love of books, particularly An Imperial Affliction by Peter Van Houten. With both expressing displeasure for the conclusion of the novel, they write to Van Houten to find out the details of his unfinished ending, and when he refuses to tell them, they plan a trip to visit him.
- CLIMAX
- Hazel Grace Lancaster is a sixteen-year-old with thyroid cancer who has to be hooked to a machine that enables her to breathe. After visiting her doctor, Maria, she is given a flyer to attend a support group. Initially reluctant to go, she joins the support group
- FALLING ACTION
- Hazel makes friends with Augustus, a seventeen-year-old boy who had his right leg removed because of Osteosarcoma - but does not want to become romantically involved with him to avoid breaking his heart when she dies.
- RESOLUTION
- Hazel is different. She walks lightly upon the earth.
- Hazel and Augustus are disheartened by Peter Van Houten in Amsterdam, but as a result of the trip they grow closer together. Hazel agrees to begin a romantic relationship with Augustus only for Augustus to reveal to Hazel that his cancer has returned and spread throughout his body
- While Augustus’s health deteriorates as he becomes weaker and weaker, Hazel and Gus grow closer together and help each other deal with their physical and emotional pain.
- Augustus dies, but Hazel is grateful to have loved him and feels comforted by the eulogy he left behind for her.
