I realized that I held many false assumptions about academic writing. For instance, I assumed that all academic and professional publications within the same discipline would be written with a standard template with a consistent structure and style.
However, I quickly learned that even identical topics of study can be presented or conducted in different ways, evident in Project III.
I now understand that each academic discipline maintains standards, all of which exist with varying degrees of rigidity, but most importantly borrow from each other in style, content, application, and more
I learned that the field of nutrition places less emphasis on style and more emphasis on clear purpose and defined target audience in publications. I began to recognize and understand the priorities in my discipline regarding writing and research.
I also assumed that academic writing within a discipline would not be interdisciplinary which I soon learned was very incorrect.
All academic writing and research are far more interconnected than I previously believed. Every academic discipline has become interdisciplinary in our increasingly connected technological and global environment. Disciplines must rely on each other to exist themselves.
Unexpectedly, I found that I used the techniques that other disciplines developed in my writing and research for my nutrition class. For instance, I used the scientific report structure to complete a food diary project for my nutrition class, which provided me with better organization and diversity of the information I collected.
From now on, I plan to approach academic disciplinary writing by compiling contextual and disciplinary expectations and sorting them by flexibility so I can produce writing that is appropriate to a rhetorical context but still allows for originality and creativity.
While writing Project IV, I realized that I was not limited to one academic or professional path that required me to sacrifice passions or interests. This project reminded me of the interconnectedness of my topics of study and helped me realize that I can pursue a path that connects all my interests.
