  • Once Birbal, minister of Akbar visited the foolish king to offer him some gifts sent by Akbar. After spending few days in the city, Birbal soon realized the whole situation of the kingdom.Once he was sitting in the court along with the king and his ministers, a poor farmer came up with a problem.
  • In the Kingdom of Fools, both the king and the minister were idiots. They didn’t want to run things like other kings, so they decided to change night into day and day into night. They ordered that everyone should be awake at night, till their fields and run their businesses only after dark, and go to bed as soon as the sun came up. Anyone who disobeyed would be punished with death. The people did as they were told for fear of death.
  • Why are you not allowing farmer to fetch water from the well ?

  • 4. He is absolutely right. As he has sold you only the well and not the water inside it, you can't use water from it.
  • 1. It is clear now that the water inside the well is yours and the farmer can't use it.

  • 5. Yes my lord, you are always right.
  • 1. My lord, two days back, I bought a well from a merchant. Now he is not allowing me to use water from the well.
  • 3. He is saying that he has only sold the well to me, not the water inside it.

  • 1. My lord, you are a genius. No-one can be like you. But I want to talk to the merchant before you come to any conclusion.
  • 2. Ok Birbal
  • Birbal was listening the conversation and was not surprised by the foolishness of king and his minister. He decided to intervene in the matter and bring justice to the poor farmer.
  • King ordered to present the merchant before the court. As all the countrymen knew that both the King and the minister were fools, the merchant was confident that the court's decision will be in his favor only and the farmer will not be allowed to fetch water from the well.Merchant arrived at the court.

  • Merchant repeats the same thing that the farmer had said.
  • My lord, it is even on paper that I have sold only my well. It is not mentioned anywhere that I have also sold the water inside it.

  • 4. I can fool the king and his minister but not Birbal. He is smart unlike the king.
  • 6. Thank you my lord, thank you for bringing justice to me.
  • 2. Yes, my lord.
  • 3. As the well belong to the farmer, you have no right to keep your water in farmer's well. Either you pay rent to the farmer to keep your water in his well or you take that out of his well immediately.
  • 5. My lord, I can't do any of the things, so now onwards farmer can use the water inside the well. Therefore, water is also his property.
  • Farmer left the court happily.King and his minister were stunned to see all the happenings.
