- Once upon a time in 1962, James Engel and his son were having a chat at the dinner table about his son's school day.
- His son told him that he was being forced to recite a prayer at school and James Engel did not like that, so he decided to take action and go to the state court to see if they would prohibit the recitation of the prayer.
- I don't like that, we should take that to the State Court
- They are making us recite a prayer at school father!
- Jutice Hugo Black wrote the majority opinion.
- The holding is the New York laws officially prescribing the Regents' prayer are inconsistent both with the purposes of the establishment clause and with the establishment clause itself.
- The New York Court of Appeals also refused to prohibit the recitation of the prayer, but he still felt determined and confident he could win his case.

- Engel finally won his case at the Supreme Court because he argued that the students should not be forced to recite a prayer because it is unconstitutional under the 1st amendment and the Establishment Clause. They all lived happily ever after, without having to recite the prayer anymore and more religious freedom.
