The king of Naples-Alonso, his brother Sebastion, his son Ferdinand, Antonio, Gonzolo, along with others are aboard a ship that has hit a giant storm. The Boatswain nobles attempt their best to keep the ship afloat but ultimately come back defeated leading everyone to be in a panic.
"Now would I give a thousand furlongs of sea for an acre of barren ground: long heath, brown furze, anything. The wills above be done, but I would fain die a dry death" (Gonzalo pg 5).
While Meranda and Prospero watch the shipwreck occur from the island, Meranda made her father promise to make sure no one was injured. Prospero agrees and then begins to tell Mernda about her history. Prospero goes on to say that he was once the duke of Milan but was overthrown by his brother Antonio. He continues to go on about how he and his daughter were saved by his still loyal subjects, soon after Meranda falls asleep.
"Both, both, my girl.By foul play, as thou sayst, were we heaved thence,But blessedly holp hither" (Prospero pg 3).
Antonio, Gonzalo, Sebastian, and Alonso go out in search of Prince Ferdinand, who has begun to fall in love with Meranda. Ariel enters playing music pushing Sebation and Antionio to sleep. In their dream state Antonio attempts to convince Sebastian to kill Alonso and claim the throne.

"Oh,you but knew how you the purpose cherishWhiles thus you mock it! How, in stripping it,You more invest it! Ebbing men indeedMost often do so near the bottom runBy their own fear or sloth" (Antonio pg 12).
Thinking that Trinculo is a spirit Caliban gets down and hides in a cloak. Trinculo notices Caliban hiding and decides to join him under the cloak in order to help bare the storm. Stephano enters drunk and notices the men's legs thinking that he had seen a four-legged monster with two heads and pour liquor into both mouths, he soon realizes who is in front of him.
"Four legs and two voices—a most delicate monster. His forward voice now is to speak well of his friend. His backward voice is to utter foul speeches and to detract" (Sebastian pg 4).
Ferdinand takes over Caliban's duties because he has no issue doing this for Miranda, the woman he loves. Miranda enters and tells Ferdinand to take a break, that she'll take over for him. They begin to flatter one another and Miranda proposes to Ferdinand. Prospero arises from his cloak and rejoices, the wedding preparation soon began.
"But this is trifling,And all the more it seeks to hide itselfThe bigger bulk it shows. Hence, bashful cunning,And prompt me, plain and holy innocence!I am your wife if you will marry me.If not, I’ll die your maid. To be your fellowYou may deny me, but I’ll be your servantWhether you will or no" (Miranda pg 4)
The men continue to drink whit Stephano pressuring Caliban to drink more which he willingly does. Caliban then goes on about Prospero and the things he put him through. Ariel enters making an occasional comment which Stephano mistakes for Trinculo because Ariel is unseen. The men then begin to plot to kill Prospero.
"I say, by sorcery he got this isle.From me he got it. If thy greatness willRevenge it on him—for I know thou darest,But this thing dare not—" (Caliban pg 3)
