  • Itimposed a tax on all papers and official documents in the American colonies, though not in England.The Act resulted in violent protests in America and the colonists argued that there should be No Taxation without Representation and that it went against the British constitution to be forced to pay a tax to which they had not agreed through representation in Parliament.
  • To help pay the expenses involved in governing the American colonies, Parliament passed the Townshend Acts, whichinitiated taxes on glass, lead, paint, paper, and tea.Because colonists had opposed the direct tax imposed by the Stamp Act, Townshend erroneously believed they would accept the indirect taxes, called duties, contained in the new measures.
