  • Today we're going to talk about the landmark case, Obergefell V. Hodges.
  • John Arthur, Obergefell's significant other, had been diagnosed with a Chronic illness. In order to make the most of his time the two got married in Maryland, where gay marriage was legal.
  • Keep in mind Obergefell and Arthur lived in Ohio, one of the few states where gay marriage was banned. So, when the time came to sign the death certificates, Obergefell could not put his name down as a legal spouse.
  • You can't sign your name down as John Arthur's legal spouse.
  • Obergefell and many other furious couples decided to take the matter to court. The verdict was decided during 2015.
  • “Does the Fourteenth Amendment require a state to license a marriage between two people of the same sex?”
  • 14th Amendment; NO LAW CAN ABRIDGE THE PRIVILEDGES GIVEN TO A U.S CITIZEN. (including but not limited to, life, liberty property)
  • In the end the court voted in favor of Obergefell, 5-4. The verdict was decided based on the premise of the 14th amendment

  • Obergefell V. Hodges was a huge step foward for gay rights. It gives us the freedom to marry whomever, no matter the sex.
